Jim Kirk, publisher and editor of The Chicago Sun-Times, announced late Saturday that all daily subscribers will be required to supply their own trees starting January 1, 2014.  This is the latest in a string of cost cutting measures imposed by The Sun-Times Media Group over the last year.

Kirk read from a prepared statement:

“In order to be competitive, we need to find ways to cut costs.  Paper is our biggest manufacturing expense… it only seems right that our readers start to pitch in.  Most of these free-loaders have trees right in their backyards just standing there.”

Financial analysts estimate that trees owned by the 243 daily subscribers will yield approximately 1600 pounds of paper. At current Sun Times content levels this inventory will provide 2 1/2 years of raw materials.
